The town of Assisi is organised over a succession of terraces, supported by powerful retaining walls, giving it a distinctive layered appearance. This design was developed to overcome the hill’s steep variations in elevation. This terraced morphology was retained in medieval urban planning and continues to define much of Assisi's layout today. Within the area, there are Roman walls constructed from rough squared stone and road paving that significantly influenced the design study. The analysis of the existing flooring, the historiographical research, and functional considerations, formed the basis in guiding the design choices. Adopting a philological approach, consistent with good restoration practices, the project reinterpreted the original flooring fragments in terms of composition, materials, and installation. Significant for the overall project was the coordination between the architectural design (flooring), structural design (laying substrate), and plant engineering (technological networks). The seamless integration of these three overlapping designs, which were complemented by expert construction management, resulted in excellent aesthetic, compositional, and functional outcomes, providing substantial benefits for the construction process.
