The challenge of integrating the building into Catanzaro's urban landscape required a thorough assessment not only of the intervention site but also of its surrounding urban context. Situated on an artificial terrace nestled between the upper and lower sections of Via Marincola Pistoia, the "Chimirri" school intervention area occupies a prominent position atop the historic core. Its terraced roofs offer an exceptional panoramic view, spanning from the Sila mountains to the Ionian Sea. The design proposal for Catanzaro intricately weaves itself into the fabric of the historic city and its relationship with the landscape. Designing in Catanzaro, mindful of its cultural dimension and historical significance, prompted contemplation on the nature of the historical architecture within its local context and the broader urban landscape. The references and recollections of its architecture emerge naturally and by matter of course; the city and its architecture have become integral to our project, driven by the necessity to draw upon elements of varied nature and diverse conceptual approaches. We referenced the materials, forms of building structures in the historic city, construction techniques, as well as the imagery of the landscape structure and the material culture of settled societies. The project was conceived with the dual aim of revitalising a neglected area of the historic city and integrating it into the decentralised university centre in the heart of Catanzaro's historic district. Consequently, the new residence is poised to serve as the linchpin of Catanzaro's urban renewal efforts. The project's guiding principles revolve around two main architectural aspects of the University Residence: its orientation towards the valley landscape and its continuous connection with the road and the city centre uphill. The decision to locate the student accommodation to the south, capitalising on favourable light and climate conditions, resulted in a front characterised by its intricate and dynamic composition. The uniformity of the student rooms on the southern facade contrasts with the newly constructed volume that replaces the demolished gymnasium. This block houses the cafeteria services and entrance area, enhancing transparency and architectural fluidity toward the city. The functional and typological core of the factory complex is embodied in the minimalist accommodations that define the structure of the university residence.
