The project idea was formulated with the goal of restoring the monumental area to offer functional and satisfactory spaces for interaction, whilst respecting the historical significance of the place. Our initial analysis focused on recovering the original levels, as numerous interventions in the Piazza Colosseo over the centuries, including some from contemporary history, had visibly distorted the terrain. These alterations not only significantly changed the morphology of the area surrounding the monument, but also caused abnormal surface water flow, leading to water stagnation and infiltration into the lower levels of the Amphitheatre. The paving of the area affected by the partial collapse of the two corridors of the Colosseum (south side, from arch 19 to arch 57) was designed radially with basalt stones. This design highlights the original structure of partition walls converging at the four construction centres of the elliptical basin. In the locations where the piers supporting the arches of the collapsed corridors once stood, a large travertine pavement, consisting of only four elements, was laid.
