The project focuses on the redevelopment of Piazza Cesare Battisti and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, situated in the historic centre of the Municipality of Rieti, along with the surrounding road areas. Emphasising the existing structures that once occupied these spaces, our design approach for the new square and paving follows the cues from historical remnants. This not only unifies the visual identity of Rieti's historic centre but also aims to reconstruct the essence of these spaces by rediscovering their historical significance. The square's design highlights these pre-existing elements by varying the materials and arrangement of features, alternating between green spaces, seating areas, and pathways. In this way, the narrative of the historic centre and its rich history is woven into the layout and materials used throughout the square. That's why green spaces were incorporated: not only to balance and soften the open area with plants but also to commemorate the former municipal gardens that once occupied this site. The intervention includes the following tasks: removing the existing pavement, installing a new sewerage system and green spaces, reconstructing the pavement and public lighting system, adding finishes, installing a fountain, and providing new street furniture accordingly.
