The project aims to restore and repurpose the former general fruit and vegetable market of Genoa, situated on Corso Sardegna and covering an area of 23,000 sqm. Construction of the market began in 1926 with a unified design featuring an organic rectangular layout, perimeter buildings housing warehouses and arcades for displaying goods, along with canopies. Some of the properties are subject to heritage preservation restrictions. The project aims to preserve part of the buildings of the historic complex, specifically the perimeter and the protected volumes. Four buildings within this perimeter were demolished to create space for a sizeable neighbourhood park. The former market accommodates several functions: connective spaces, public businesses, shops (7,000 sqm), park (8,500 sqm), association space (400 sqm), and car parks (5,600 sqm). The restoration project for the existing historic buildings aims to preserve the market's character by maintaining the integrity of its surfaces and the unity of the complex, ensuring all structures are efficiently conserved. The new neighbourhood park promotes a mix of functions and users, enhancing comfort through well-designed spaces and amenities. A glass roof covers a portion of the public areas, enhancing pedestrian comfort during colder months. Photo credits: Anna Positano and Gaia Gambiacci (Studio Campo).
