The project to enhance and organise the pathway along the ancient Roman Appian Way has been identified as a nationally significant initiative aimed at enhancing and enriching the cultural offerings of southern Italy. This project spans across the regions of Lazio, Campania, Basilicata, and Puglia, covering a total of 612 km, and has been nominated for inclusion on the UNESCO world heritage list. Understanding the full potential and temporal diversity of a "linear" archaeological site such as the Regina Viarum, which extends over 600 km, is one of the primary objectives of the landscape conception. This project focuses on interpreting and restoring the various chronological, cultural, and interpretative layers. It emphasises a research approach where each element interacts without competing, fostering an osmotic dialogue between the existing and designed landscapes. The goal is to restore identity and comprehension of the site, promoting a form of slow and sustainable tourism that can enhance the culture and economy of the communities along the route: a museum spanning archaeology, monuments, history, and culture. The interventions aimed at enhancing the route include efforts to ensure its safety, the design of bridges and walkways for crossing waterways or high-traffic roads, and the addition of new vegetation. This will help walkers identify the "authentic" Appian Way even when traces of the Regina Viarum are faint or absent. Along the route, several rest areas have been established, equipped with totems that serve as pivotal design and informational elements for the museum project's brand identity signage.
