The former convent of Santa Margherita Nuova in Procida is a historic monastery dating back to the late 16th century, established by Dominican monks fleeing Saracen incursions. The project transformed this ancient site into a cultural centre with exhibition halls and museum spaces. The restoration of the monumental complex, along with the consolidation of the barbicans and the ridge, was particularly significant in its environmental context, enabling the creation of terraces below, offering a promenade with stunning views of Capri, Pizzaco, Chiaia, and Corricella. The intervention became necessary after the collapses suffered in the 1960s and involved the meticulous reconstruction of the collapsed sections, adhering strictly to the principles of Recognisability and Compatibility. This ensures that the reconstructed parts remain distinguishable from the original ones, and that the materials used do not cause any physical or aesthetic damage to the original structure, matching its chemical, physical, and mechanical properties. Architecturally, the reconstruction of the missing sections has enabled full accessibility to all areas of the former convent, along with the creation of new internal and external walkways, offering a promenade with unparalleled views and perspectives. The complex is visible from the south, both from long and short distances, and prominently from the sea. Its dominant position and altitude make its visibility especially significant during the evening and night hours. Therefore, the objective of the lighting project was to enhance the perceived reading of the monumental complex from medium to long distances. The approach involved using organic, homogeneous lighting that avoided flatness, instead highlighting projections, recesses, chiaroscuro, and compositional elements. This was achieved by avoiding excessive changes in luminous fluxes, employing graduated intensities for different vertical surfaces.
