The project is part of the program for the creation of one of Italy’s most significant libraries, research laboratories, and study rooms, notable for the value and specialisation of its book collection. Palazzo della Canonica, built in 1566 based on a design by Vasari, serves as a scenic backdrop, completing the urban composition. Declared a cultural asset under Article 10 of Legislative Decree 42/2004, the palazzo still prominently features remnants of medieval structures, including long distribution loggias on three levels surrounding central gardens and a corner tower house. The valorisation plan identified two primary uses: a library with consultation and research rooms, and laboratories. Structural interventions were necessary to restore the building and spatially reconfigure the ancient distribution areas, addressing level differences to ensure full accessibility throughout the complex. Complementary spaces and functions were reorganised and optimised, and the historic floors and decorated ceilings were meticulously restored and enhanced.
