The design phase for the restoration and enhancement of the iconic Monumental Palace in the EUR district of Rome has begun, with the aim of reopening its majestic exhibition halls to the public.
This building, one of the most significant examples of Italian architecture from the mid-20th century, was designed by architects Pietro Aschieri, Gino Peressutti, Domenico Bernardini, and engineer Cesare Pascoletti. It houses an immense collection of artistic and architectural heritage, including casts and reproductions of Ancient Rome, such as faithful replicas of the iconic Trajan's Column. Originally constructed for the 1942 Universal Exposition and inaugurated in 1952, the museum has been out of use for years due to safety issues. The project plans to restore and repurpose the structure, preserving its sculptural and architectural works while ensuring its safe and accessible use as a contemporary museum.
The contract for the design and project management was awarded to "SAB Architettura ed Ingegneria Integrata S.r.l. (lead company), Giannantoni Ingegneria S.r.l., AR Project Soc. Coop., ArcheoEd S.r.l., and Architect Manuel Petacchiola" as part of the framework agreement "CAPUT MUNDI – Next Generation EU for Major Tourist Events" for the Redevelopment and Restoration of the cultural heritage of the city of Rome and the Provinces of Lazio. The total value of the works amounts to over 20 million euros.
